Stanford announced the death of a student in a campus residence on Monday. A day later, the university confirmed it was Katie Meyer, the 22-year-old goalkeeper and captain of the Stanford women’s soccer team. Meyer led the Cardinal to victory in the 2019 NCAA College Cup championship game. The cause of her death was not released.

Katie won acclaim in the 2019 title match after stopping two penalties to help Stanford to a 5-4 shootout win over North Carolina. Meyer celebrated her second save by shouting for several seconds and nervously pointing towards the Stanford name printed on her game jersey.

Stanford released an official statement following her death.

“Katie was extraordinarily committed to everything and everyone in her world,” said the statement. “Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline she said ‘changed my perspective on the world and the very important challenges that we need to work together to overcome’ to the passion she brought to the Cardinal women’s soccer program and to women’s sports in general.”

Meyer was also the acting Stanford team captain and an international studies major. The university made counseling staff available and offering support to grieving students on campus.
